An eye-catcher on the business park in Kesteren. That is certainly what you can call the new office of P.C. van Tuijl Kesteren. With its characteristic arched and cantilevered roof and large glass facades, it automatically attracts attention. The recently completed building is a calling card for construction company J.G. Timmer, located in the same street and on the same industrial estate in Kesteren.
For family business J.G. Timmer, which handles construction projects primarily throughout the Netherlands on its own account, the P.C. van Tuijl office was a challenging assignment. "There were some tricky elements in architect Huibers' design," says Pieter Kool, project manager at J.G. Timmer. "For example, the building has a round concrete core. That is a nod to the shape of a grain silo and thus a reference to the client's role as a producer of animal feed. That core also forms the heart of the new office, containing the elevator and a circular staircase, surrounded by the central corridor. On the outside of this are the office spaces that have large glass curtain walls. All activity literally revolves around this "silo. The core is closed off with a semicircular skylight."
The roof of the building is certainly striking. It extends considerably on all sides. The four corners are rounded and the roof bends upward to all sides. Ostensibly, the roof is covered with wood. Kool: "It was a challenge to realize that. With real wood we wouldn't have been able to bend the roof that far. In Millboard we found the right product, a molded cladding with the appearance of wood, but also enormously flexible and maintenance-free."
The construction process on this project is a model for J.G. Timmer's approach. Kool: "We were involved from beginning to end. We converted the architect's drawings into working drawings and were responsible for the groundwork up to part of the furnishings, such as the kitchens. We consult a lot with our clients, about choices of materials or modifications. That's where our strength lies; we relieve our clients and include them in the entire process. In this project, too, many changes were made along the way, so that the client gets the building he really wants. As a contractor, we have experience, expertise and modern equipment that we own ourselves. We combine these qualities with a flexible approach, with short lines of communication within a flat organization. The result is always a short and efficient construction process."
Director Pieter van Tuijl of P.C. van Tuijl is extremely satisfied with the construction process. "The lines of communication were of course very short in this case because J.G. Timmer is right down the street from us. You can easily drop in on each other to ask how things are going. The communication left nothing to be desired, with good supervisors and project managers. We had a certain image in mind for our new building and they thought about it extensively during the process. Suggestions were also made to do things better. For example, we did not want any noise pollution between the different rooms in the building. I can guarantee you: I can't hear my neighbor."
