Gable solutions at great heights at Lighthouse Eindhoven

At 109 meters, Lighthouse Eindhoven is the city's tallest residential tower and is located at Strijp-S, next to the Klokgebouw. For the aluminum window frames and curtain walls, the main contractor chose to work with Thermo Konstrukties at an early stage. This made it possible to develop solutions for challenges such as height, wind load and noise.

Thermo Konstrukties was involved in the project from the beginning. Project engineer Joost Thissen joined the preliminary process two years ago. “We were asked to help think about the design and manufacturability of the window frames. That early involvement allowed us to work out solutions that would actually work later in execution,” he says. During that period, several calculations and adjustments were made before the final order followed.

Prefabricated facades at a height of 110 meters

In total, Thermo Konstrukties assembled 7,900 square meters of aluminum window frames and 1,100 square meters of curtain walls, from the commercial plinth to the penthouse. The height of the tower required extra attention to wind and water tightness and the strength of the profiles. “From a certain height, extra stringent requirements apply and that means extra precise calculations,” Thissen explains.

Another special feature is that two of the facades were prefabricated and lifted in. They were built entirely in Thermo Konstrukties“ factory and then hoisted in at the construction site. ”We had to specially adapt our production hall for that, but in the future we can continue to use that extra space. After all, prefabricated construction is becoming increasingly popular."

Noise requirements as a design challenge

A special feature is the use of special ventilation windows for low-noise ventilation. Here, two windows are combined with perforated plating. “This is an in-house design, developed for this project. The system meets the high noise requirements and also offers possibilities again for future projects.”

Completion and collaboration

The homes are now in use. After a final round of service, the project will be completed. Thissen looks back with satisfaction. “The cooperation ran smoothly and we enjoyed working on this beautiful eye-catcher for Eindhoven.”
