One expert for a range of specialty glass solutions

Norbertus Lyceum, Roosendaal

In January 2025, the students and teachers of the Norbertus Lyceum moved into a renovated school building in Roosendaal. In just under two years, the beautiful monumental building on Lyceumlaan was rebuilt and expanded into a brand new, modern learning environment with historical accents. In the process, several wooden rafters were reinforced. Also, part of the first floor made way for a grandstand staircase and modern installations were added. In addition, all glass was replaced. Commissioned by aluminum facade specialist Thermal, Vandaglas supplied over 1,000 m2 of glass for the existing building and new construction, with the client and end user benefiting from a single point of contact for multiple specialized glass solutions. From single-layered windows to the most complex glass facades.

"We already sat down with Thermal in the calculation phase, to help think about the best glass solutions for the Norbertus Lyceum," says Merijn de Jong-Lamper, Account Manager at Vandaglas. "For example, with regard to glass superstructures, glass thicknesses and safety. Because this building is a school building, explicit attention was paid to injury-resistant, fall-through and fire-resistant safety glass. For pleasant indoor comfort, optimal thermal insulation in double-glazing and the application of additional solar heat-resistant glass properties were also considered. The focus was also on (technical) feasibility and manufacturability, allowing Thermal to easily incorporate the selected glass solutions into its profile systems. In doing so, both Thermal and the Norbertus Lyceum benefited from all the advantages of a single point of contact, a professional team of glass experts and a diversity of special glass solutions."

Specialized production sites

In total, Vandaglas produced and supplied over 1,000 m2 of high-quality glass for this project, in various glass designs and with four distinctive glass properties. All fixed sizes of ProtectPerform 44.4 single laminated safety glass were made at the Vandaglas plant in Almelo. These laminated panes were assembled by the Vandaglas plant in Emmen into the high-performance insulating glass IsoPerform SS Zero NG (Ug: 1.0 W/m2.K) and IsoPerform SKN165. "The latter concerns solar heat-resistant glass and has been applied on the sunny south/west sides of the building," says De Jong-Lamper. "All the glass is combined with fire-resistant and fall-through resistant counter glazing, with which we comply with all relevant laws and regulations for schools. Of course without compromising the aesthetic image the architect had in mind."

Extreme dimensions

For the transparent glass end wall of the school, Vandaglas supplied extremely large glass facades more than 3 meters high and 3 meters wide. "The biggest challenge here was to make the glass facades as large as possible, but also to keep them manageable for our client," says De Jong-Lamper. "For example, to ensure quality assembly." Despite the complexity of both glazing and logistics, virtually all of the glass was delivered to the project site in Roosendaal on schedule, complete and undamaged. "This was a wonderfully beautiful glass project to deliver!"
