An educational campus where meeting, interaction and collaboration are paramount requires more than just good lighting. For Campus300 in Den Bosch, Zumtobel Group is providing a smart approach that balances technology, design and sustainability. No standard lighting plan, but customization in each luminaire and in each teaching space.
Campus300 will be a multi-faceted site: teaching spaces for Avans, 124 student housing units from BrabantWonen, an underground parking garage and a public courtyard garden. Construction is halfway through and completion is scheduled for September 2025.
In this project, Zumtobel Group is providing all the lighting. From splash-proof luminaires to emergency lighting and design solutions: everything comes from one supplier. And that turned out to be a hit. "Initially, several manufacturers were prescribed," says account manager Tom Deijkers. "But we showed that we could deliver the complete package - and more. That's why we were allowed to complete the project in its entirety."
Zumtobel Group operates worldwide in lighting systems for the business market. In the Netherlands, the focus is on sectors such as industry, education, retail and healthcare. "We are in the whole chain of lighting," says marketing manager Bas Heuvelmans. "From components to luminaires, including smart control systems and everything in-house." That broad scope makes the company an ideal partner for projects with diverse requirements. "We were already in talks with the installation consultant about some of the fixtures," says Deijkers. "When it turned out that we could also supply and improve the other types, the ball really started rolling."
Zumtobel Group looks beyond technical specifications. "We do more than deliver what is requested," says Deijkers. "Our added value lies in the fact that we can engage with the various Decision Making Units to refine and optimize the existing design. This creates an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable light image, which is also more energy efficient and sustainable. A big gain in energy consumption and sustainability, in other words."
The choice of materials also plays a role in this. Many of the installed downlighters are made of over 90% recycled aluminum. A subtle light line was chosen on the stairs. "That's how you create safety without visually disrupting the space," he says. At the central catering point, even a touch of design is just around the corner. Deijkers: "We installed a fine-mesh rail system there with mini spotlights that fit precisely into the construction. You only see the light, not the technology."
Zumtobel Group is proud of the cooperation. Not only because of the end result, but especially because of the preliminary process. "From the beginning we looked critically at how things could be even better," says Heuvelmans. "With the consultant, the architect and later also with the installer. This allowed us not only to guarantee functionality but also to raise the aesthetic level. And that's what makes this project so much fun for us!"
