As part of the renovation of the Vogel and Bloemen neighborhood in Rhoon, 141 of the 176 homes were fitted with exterior wall insulation from Sto Isoned. IJsselmonde installed the insulation system. Both companies look back on excellent cooperation and a smooth design and implementation process.
Sto Isoned and IJsselmonde are both chain partners of Hemubo, the main contractor of the renovation project. They were added to the construction team at an early stage. "Hemubo is steering when it comes to system choices," says project manager Paulien Beitschat of Sto Isoned. "For the exterior wall insulation, we are the regular system supplier. IJsselmonde is a very well-known and recognized application company that we as Sto are very happy and frequent partners with." Jacco Oostenbrug of IJsselmonde adds, "We have been working exclusively and for many years with Sto Isoned's products. By now we can read and write with each other."

The renovation of the Bird and Flower neighborhood includes a total of 176 homes in eight different housing types. On 141 homes, divided into six types, the exterior wall insulation system StoTherm Classic was applied. This system has been used worldwide for forty years and has a track record of one hundred million square meters. The system consists of an adhesive layer containing the insulation package, a mortar fabric layer (a fiber-reinforced stress distribution layer) and then the final finish. Beitschat: "That final finish can be anything. From decorative plaster to mineral stone strips in a variety of colors and textures."
Sto Isoned was involved in the design, which BTR Architecture + Architecture created for this project. A characteristic feature is the brick exterior in different colors, with decorative plaster in places. Different masonry and stucco dressings create a lively facade appearance. "With our mineral stone strips, we realized the intended facade appearance," says Beitschat. "This was preceded by an extensive sampling process. The architect made the final choice in stone strips, with a beautiful color palette as the end result. The calm natural tones match the homes perfectly and give the Bird and Flower neighborhood a whole new look. What I personally really like is that a completely different neighborhood has been created that is not inferior to new construction."

IJsselmonde was also involved in the project as early as the design phase. "We contributed our expertise to the construction of the system and the connections," says Oostenbrug. "In addition to the aesthetic improvement, the exterior wall insulation makes an important contribution to making the neighborhood more sustainable. The heat demand of the homes will be much lower. Together with the other sustainability measures taken by Hemubo, this results in a considerable label jump. The homes have gone from energy label E/F to A." Beitschat emphasizes, "An integral approach like on this project is important for achieving the sustainability ambition, but also for the process. Because of the good cooperation in the design phase, the implementation went smoothly."
In spring 2019, IJsselmonde began work on the exterior wall insulation. The size of the project, combined with the different colors and masonry dressings, was the biggest concern. "This required logistical preparation," Oostenbrug explains. "On top of that, because of the flora and fauna, we had to adjust our work sequence. This required flexibility on our part, but also good communication with the residents. They remained in their homes during the work. Now that the work is complete, we can say that everything worked out well." Beitschat also looks back on the project with pleasure: "Our chain partnership allowed us to work in a streamlined manner and to structurally go for quality. That led to smooth progress, few failure costs and - most importantly - satisfied residents."
