Pleasant and safe living in The Mayor

Balm has been the address for reinforcing, repairing and protecting concrete structures for more than 60 years. Following impressive projects such as the Rechtbank Overijssel, location Zwolle, the International School in Amsterdam and building complex Tricotage in Veenendaal, the specialist from Vianen is also involved in the transformation of the former KPMG office complex in Amstelveen into The Mayor. "Commissioned by construction combination UBA - de Nijs Amstelveen v.o.f. and in a pleasant construction team collaboration, we reinforced the existing structural floors," says director Dennis Visser.

Balm was involved in the transformation at a very early stage. "The structural study by Pieters Bouwtechniek had shown that not all the existing structural concrete floors were suitable for their new function," Visser says. "To get ahead of load problems, we were asked to improve the moment capacity. We asked our regular structural engineer for adhesive reinforcement projects ABT to review Pieters Bouwtechniek's report and to develop a recommendation for reinforcing the floors with carbon adhesive reinforcement. This was followed by the quotation process, after which we started implementation in 2020."

"Based on ABT's construction drawings and dimensions, we applied carbon adhesive reinforcement both under and on the structural floors," Visser says. "For example, around the newly cut recesses. In order to guarantee sufficient bond strength, extensive bond strength tests were carried out beforehand. And adhesion strength tests also followed after application, to demonstrate that the reinforcement performance fully met the design conditions." Thanks to Balm's adhesive reinforcement, The Mayor's floors can be structurally loaded as intended, Visser emphasizes. "The floors again fully meet the use guidelines, which means residents will soon be able to live safely."

Following the adhesive reinforcement, Balm also fixed several leaks in The Mayor's parking basement.
