Innovation is a must: even when it comes to glass systems

Standing still is going backwards. This expression definitely applies to Interior Glassolutions B.V. The Veenendaal-based specialist in glass systems for interior applications continuously innovates its products, focusing on a comfortable, safe and healthy (WELL) working environment. Currently, for example, optimizations are being implemented in sound insulation, smoke-resistance and sustainability, taking the glass systems to an even higher level.

Working in an open-plan office apparently has many advantages: maximum daylight flows in, employees can easily and quickly make contact with colleagues and square meters are optimally utilized. Yet there is also a downside, says Geurt Roelofsen, director of Interior Glassolutions B.V. "There is often (too) much noise in open-plan offices. For example, research by PanelWizard among 1,000 respondents shows that two-thirds (!) of employees in an open-plan office are distracted several times a day by ambient noise. Especially calling (75%) and talking colleagues (72%), ringing telephones (66%) and noise from playing videos (54%) are perceived as very distracting. The consequences are difficulty concentrating (51%), feeling restless (34%) and fatigue (27%). Our glass systems combat this. Thanks to our all-glass walls and doors, daylighting, optimal sightlines and mutual interaction are maintained, while noise pollution is no longer an issue. Importantly, our systems also contribute to a healthy, (corona)safe and hygienic working environment. All glass systems can be easily cleaned. Also when using acoustic or colored foils and/or enameled glass."

Sound insulation up to 60 dB

Interior Glassolutions B.V.'s all-glass walls can easily achieve sound insulation (Rw) of up to 60 dB, Roelofsen emphasizes. "This puts us at the maximum of what is currently technically feasible. In terms of doors, however, improvements are still possible. Our doors have a maximum Rw of 50 dB; a value that we want to increase to 60 dB before the end of this year. For this, we are working closely with the Peutz engineering firm. Various tests have already been carried out in Peutz's independent acoustic laboratory to reveal small insulation defects/air leaks. On this basis, the final weak spots will be effectively sealed."

Optimal smoke resistance in accordance with Sa and S200

In addition, Interior Glassolutions B.V. is highly committed to smoke resistance. "Because not the fire itself, but additional smoke development is the number one cause of death in fire, new requirements for smoke spread and fire and escape safety have applied since July 1, 2021," Roelofsen knows. "We have already tested various glass systems in accordance with the European Sa and S200 classifications. And several more tests are planned for the coming months as well, with which we can demonstrate compliance with the latest requirements."

Full glass and 100% durable

A third focus point at the moment is sustainability. "The edge frames of glass systems are often made of steel, aluminum or wood," Roelofsen knows. "Especially the processing of steel and aluminum requires a lot of energy. So: the less you use of this, the better it is. A few years ago we already introduced the first glass systems without vertical posts. Currently, moreover, we are working on solutions to also reduce horizontal aids. This creates step-by-step a full-glass and 100% sustainable system. After all, glass is completely and infinitely recyclable, which perfectly matches the sustainability ambitions of many customers." Interior Glassolutions B.V.'s ambition is to introduce the new systems before the end of this year.
