'Scoring' with a hybrid concrete floor

Logistics service provider Kloosterboer keeps expanding. In Rotterdam they are building yet another cold store with three enormous freezer cells. The main contractor scored quite a few EMVI points with Twintec's hybrid, super-flat concrete floors. The reinforcement of the hybrid floors alone saved a week and a half compared to a traditionally reinforced floor. An interview with Jeroen Boers of Twintec.

The new cold store comprises three freezer cells of 2,500 m² each, a shipping area of 2,200 m² and an outside floor of 3,000 m². Twintec was asked to provide an appropriate and, above all, economically interesting solution. Boers: "For the three freezer cells we applied our hybrid floor, combining traditional reinforcement with steel fibers in the concrete. The same 'trick' was also applied to the expedition floor. The big advantage is that we can save considerably on labor time on site. The reinforcement now only took about three days per cold store. With a traditionally reinforced floor, for such surfaces you are easily a week busy with reinforcement."

Independent flatness measurement
The steel fibers are already added by Twintec in the concrete plant. "On site, it's a matter of applying the top reinforcement and along the edges and in crack-prone areas the supplementary reinforcement," Boers explains. "Then pouring and driving off each floor also took another day. Quite a logistical operation, too, since it involved 400 m³ of concrete each time. To prevent the steel fibers from appearing on the surface, after pouring we sprinkled the wet concrete with a wear layer finishing material. Then the floor was floated and provided with a preservative layer. The floors were realized according to NEN 2747 class 2 - or a super-flat floor, and delivered with a flatness measurement and report by an independent agency. The pouring of the exterior floor with traditional reinforcement is scheduled for early 2019."
