Video: Why a Fire Test for Fire-Rated Window Frames Isn't Enough

Video: Why a Fire Test for Fire-Rated Window Frames Isn't Enough

A supplier cites a successful fire test, and the window frame therefore appears to be adequately substantiated. However, during the quality inspection, the window frame in question may are rejected by the quality assurance officer. For the contractor, this means coordinating with the supplier again, updating the completion documentation, and possibly even adjusting the scope of work.

For fire-resistant exterior window frames with windows or doors that open, a CE marking in accordance with EN 16034 with an accompanying Declaration of Performance (DoP) to ensure performance. In addition, the supplier’s production must be inspected periodically. WEBO combines these features in Vuurvast®: fire- and smoke-resistant wood and wood-aluminum window frames for commercial and residential construction. In Part 6 of the video series Peutz and WEBO explain what contractors need to check in advance to prevent problems during construction and upon completion.

A tested component is not a free pass for every manufacturer

In practice, people often refer to a window frame configuration or detail that has been successfully tested before. That does not automatically mean that Every window frame manufacturer is allowed to produce this model and market it as a fire-resistant product.

The delivered version must be within the classified scope of application fall. This applies not only to the frame profile, but also to factors such as dimensions, glazing, opening direction, hardware, and other configuration details.

In addition, the production of these fire-resistant exterior window frames under a rigorous system for assessing and verifying consistent performance. The manufacturer must have a certified production control system. A notified product certification body, also known as a Notified Body (NoBo), assesses the manufacturing site and periodically monitors production.

This must be clear before making a purchase

Contractors, work planners, and quality assurance professionals should check at least three things before making a final purchase:

  • Does the selected window frame design fall within the classified scope of application?
  • Does the manufacturer provide a suitable Declaration of Performance and CE Marking in accordance with EN 16034?
  • Is the production of the manufacturer in question certified and in accordance with periodic monitoring Posted?

If this information is not requested until the time of delivery, the options for resolution are limited. A missing document can sometimes still be provided, but a window frame that falls outside the classified scope of application or was manufactured by a non-certified manufacturer presents a significantly greater problem. This can lead to discussion, delays, repair costs, and possible rejection. Peutz and WEBO Put EN 16034 into Practice

In Video 6 As part of the joint knowledge series by Peutz and WEBO, Harm Leenders, Head of the Laboratory for Fire Safety at Peutz, and Jan Nijmeijer, Quality & Innovation Manager at WEBO, explain what EN 16034 in Practice means.

The video explains the relationship between the test report, the declaration of performance, the CE marking, and production process control. This provides construction professionals with practical guidance to assess, as early as the procurement and work planning stages, whether the documentation supporting fire-resistant window frames is in fact complete.
