During Floriade 2022, The Natural Pavilion would like to inspire and show visitors how we as a society can live, live and work nature-inclusively. The building is constructed almost entirely of natural (bio-based) materials and is literally an accumulation of innovations. The stair treads and platform components by Derako and Woodjoint match this perfectly.
The construction industry faces enormous challenges. Not only is the housing shortage very great, but also the reduction of our CO2 and nitrogen emissions combined with stricter legislation and environmental regulations creates great complexity in project development. The Natural Pavilion, part of the Dutch Innovation Experience, shows that it is already possible to develop homes, schools and offices on an industrial scale that are fully circular, bio-based and energy-neutral.

For the stairs and various landings in the building, Derako International and Woodjoint joined forces. Derako has been an industrial manufacturer and supplier of solid wood systems for ceiling, wall and façade for more than 30 years. Thanks to worldwide projects, it has years of technical experience in its own production environment. Woodjoint - formerly part of TimmerSelekt Doornenbal - is an independent wood partner for high-quality finger-welding and laminating of wood. It gives wooden window frames and wooden building and infrastructure components a sustainable second life by reusing them after optimization. Both companies have a socially responsible vision of business. Circularity and sustainability are of paramount importance. Responsible products and reuse of wood and wood products are important spearheads. New application possibilities are continuously explored.
This is also how the idea for The Natural Pavilion was born. The residual wood from Derako's production process is given a second life here, by reusing it in a high-quality and smart way. The selected residual material was delivered to Woodjoint, which used its finger-welding process to make steps and platform parts for the pavilion. An innovative and sustainable solution.
Recently, Derako conducted extensive research into the application of finger jointed wood within its ceiling systems. This revealed a number of major advantages. The most important are the efficiency gains and the sustainable use of raw material during the production process. In addition, finger-welding is well suited for robust and substantial ceiling designs. The cooperation with Woodjoint therefore offers good opportunities, for new ideas with recycled materials as well as for the further realization of circular and sustainable wood projects.
