After using a temporary location for two and a half years, it was a relief for the students and teachers of IKC de Sjofar to move into the new building in Apeldoorn. The official opening took place on September 5. Jansman Bouw completed the building in March, which gave the school the opportunity to furnish everything and start using it at the beginning of the new school year.
The integrated childcare center houses a primary school, daycare center, and after-school care facility (BSO). Every day, around 325 children between the ages of 0 and 12 use the building, which has a gross floor area of 1,900 m2. Previously, they were housed in an outdated building, which has since been demolished. In the meantime, they used a temporary location.
It was not the first new build that Jansman Bouw had undertaken for the umbrella organization Stichting PCBO Apeldoorn, which operates 25 school buildings in the Apeldoorn region. “We started in May 2024 and reached the highest point at the end of July. We are very satisfied with how the process went in collaboration with PCBO, the architect, and the municipality. We had good preparation, a good construction process, and followed the schedule,” says Gerrold Hulsman, project manager at Jansman Bouw.

The new school has been designed in a traditional style, using concrete and brickwork. It is a modern building with fresh colors and lots of light. The hall with its stage stairs forms the central part, with a glass balustrade above it. The hall has a mobile glass wall, which can be used to enlarge the space even further. Acoustic wall covering ensures pleasant acoustics. Hulsman: “The central hall has an important function. Performances can be given there, and music is central to it. The theme of head, hands, and heart is central throughout the school. This is emphasized in the exterior facade, for example. The relief in the brickwork shows a musical stave, which refers to the shofar, a historical wind instrument.”
A lot of attention has been paid to the interiors of the classrooms, with cabinets that incorporate digital whiteboards. These cover the entire wall and the doors are fitted with magnetic HPL cladding. This is a top layer with an attractive appearance, but you can also hang work on it. Hulsman: “You can see here that attention has been paid to every detail of the interior and the appearance of the school.”

On the green square, children play and learn in a natural environment. Here too, musical instruments are incorporated in the form of playground equipment. Visible and invisible, nature and sustainable materials have been taken into account. For example, there are PV panels on the roof and a gray water system for collecting rainwater and flushing the toilets. There were strict requirements for the design in terms of airtightness. “We measured underpressure and overpressure. We were well within the standards, even though they were strict. We challenged ourselves to do it right,” says Hulsman. He sees that the result is to the satisfaction of the architect, students, and staff. “They are all very enthusiastic, which is great to see. We build a lot of schools, and you can see that the team and the students enjoy coming to a new school building. It is new, modern, and has fresh colors. They are ready to get back to work here.”
