Integral site approach at DC JYSK in Lelystad

The basis for construction

Before you can build a distribution center like JYSK's in Lelystad, the ground has to be right. That requires expertise, planning and pace. For this project, Jaro BV took care of the complete groundwork and layout of the site. Director Jan Hameeteman tells us how it was done.

Jaro operates in the ground, road and water construction industry, working for developers, contractors and governments, among others. “We have a wide range of assignments and clients. Most often we are asked for site preparation or residential development.” At DC JYSK, the assignment came through an established partnership with Vrolijk, partner of main contractor Willy Naessens Netherlands. “In the preliminary stage, we already thought along about the execution. On that basis, the choice was made for us.”

Work began with preparing the site for construction. This included applying a sand package. This ensures that the ground settles and is stable enough for construction. “We did all the earthwork for the building, including foundations, floors and trenches for cables and pipes,” said Dr. K. K., who is a member of the board of directors.”

From ready to build to ready to live

After construction began, Jaro remained involved. The company laid the main sewer, installed oil-fuel separators and took care of the paving and landscaping of the outdoor area. Green areas were also part of the work. This not only made the site ready for construction but also ready for use. According to Hameeteman, that very combination makes the project special. “We actually deployed all of our disciplines here. That doesn't happen often on this scale.”

Fast switching on a large scale

The size of the project and the short lead time required flexibility. “The schedule was tight. That meant we had to move quickly and coordinate well with other parties on the construction site.” That it succeeded makes him pleased. “This is a large and leading project. If you can achieve this, then you show that you can handle this kind of work.”
