Engineering, production and assembly of the steel structure, roof sheeting and canopies

Commissioned by main contractor BAM Bouw & Techniek, Buiting Machinebouw & Staalconstructie B.V. is taking care of the engineering, production and assembly of the steel structure and roof sheeting for the new interfaculty education building of TU Delft. Also the canopies with steel flower boxes of the green facade were developed and realized by the specialist together with BAM. 

Buiting has an experienced team of about 150 people, including technical-commercial consultants, draftsmen, technically trained production staff and six in-house assembly teams. The production halls in Broekland and Almelo, accounting for a total area of 16,000 m², are equipped with up-to-date machinery. "Contractors, such as BAM, call on our expertise for the design of their steel structures, as well as the static main and detail calculations, calculation, engineering, production, conservation and assembly," says deputy director Johan Burger. "This is also how we were asked to collaborate on the realization of the Echo education building."

"The robust structure consists of steel columns, girders and hollow-core slabs in addition to concrete. The main supporting structure includes several impressive trusses measuring 36 by 5 meters, each weighing approximately 36 tons, partly set from sheet steel 25 mm thick. Curved girders made of sheet steel were integrated into the void. Other striking elements are the canopies on the outside of the building and the green facade with heavy steel flower boxes, which were suspended from the roof with stainless steel cables," Burger says. "All structures were developed by our own engineers and then considerable pressure was put on our production to produce everything accurately and deliver it to the construction site on time. By now, almost all of the canopies have been assembled and this project is virtually finished for us."
