Roxen van Dijk, with his company ROXEN Engineering, provided the engineering for Maersk's new distribution center and office at the Maasvlakte.
Working closely with main contractor Cordeel Netherlands and architect Arcadis, he translated the design from concept to technical and execution design. Specifically, this involved producing detailed construction drawings and a 3D model that acted as a technical manual and instructions for the construction process.
Van Dijk previously worked for an architectural firm specializing in villa design. "During one of our projects I came into contact with the executive side of drawing, the technical part. That appealed to me so much that I decided to develop further in this field. The passion for bringing architectural concepts to fruition was ultimately the driving force behind the decision to start my own business," Van Dijk said.
He recreated Arcadis' final design in a building model according to Cordeel's working standard. This model served as the basis for further development into the execution design and As-Built phase. "That process provides an opportunity to identify points that need further elaboration, such as spaces that need to be modified to comply with the Building Code and the integration of structural steel into the design. That way you create the opportunity to give room for design refinement and optimization."
Van Dijk looks back on the project with satisfaction. "We had a fine collaboration with each other. There is now a beautiful building, in which both Arcadis' design and Cordeel's interests are central. It's very nice to finally see the end result after all the preparations that have been made, that's such a great thing about the construction industry." Meanwhile, Van Dijk is working on his next project: he is supporting KCAP Architects in Rotterdam with elaborating the design of a number of apartment complexes in the Merwede zone. He is also working on some
villa projects in Suriname.
