Floor, roof and concrete come together in integral approach

Steering together for quality at DC JYSK

JYSK's distribution center in Lelystad is technically demanding. With an area of approximately 125,000 square meters and highly automated high bays, everything revolves around reliability and longevity. For Sika, the focus was on an integrated approach to floor, roof and concrete, where performance and sustainability go hand in hand.

Bonne Maat of Sika was involved at an early stage. “In my role as specification manager, I am close to architects and clients such as main contractor Willy Naessens Netherlands and partner Vrolijk, to get our solutions right in the specifications.” That early involvement suits his way of working. “Consultative selling for me means having lots of conversations and showing quality. Then the choice follows naturally.”

For example, Sika provides admixtures for concrete floors to make them stronger and more durable; flooring systems that can withstand heavy use; and roofing materials that help save energy.

Strong floor for heavy use

A key component is the floor in the battery charging rooms. Here the team chose a polyurethane-cementitious floor system (Sika© Ucrete©) that can withstand heavy loads and chemicals. Forklifts and pallet trucks demand a lot from the surface. The chosen solution remains stable and wear-resistant under these conditions.

More durable concrete and cooler roof

Adding admixtures to the concrete floor reduces the water-cement factor. That makes for a denser and more durable concrete structure. And on the roof, Sika recommended a white plastic roofing material that reflects sunlight, reducing the rate at which the building heats up. That reduces cooling requirements and increases the efficiency of the approximately 3,000 solar panels. Says Maat, “Talk about unique buying reasons (UBR).” According to him, it's ultimately about trust. “Price plays a part, but quality is the deciding factor. When that is clear, you make better choices together.”
