Sprinkler system from a can (beer)

AB Inbev's new distribution center features SPIE sprinklers. This installation is not just one, say project manager Mark Mommersteeg and sales manager Juri de Poorter, because the components are all interconnected.

The Fire Protection & Security business unit of multidisciplinary technical services provider SPIE laid the complete sprinkler system, with integrated fire alarm system, for the distribution center in Osdorp. "That means the sprinkler pump, the sprinkler tank, the sprinklers with associated piping and the integrated fire alarm system," says De Poorter. 

SPIE created a link between the fire and sprinkler alarm system. This ensures clear operation and user-friendliness. "All systems communicate with each other, which also triggers the evacuation of people in the building. That's the advantage of one party, then you can easily do everything at once."

From the starting point

SPIE is a strategic partner of Heembouw. "This means that we are involved in Heembouw's projects early in the process," Mommersteeg says. Installing sprinklers is really cake for SPIE. "But this time things went a little differently. We were now involved in the project right from the beginning, and were allowed to think along about the design and how best to integrate the sprinklers." Not only that was different on this project. "The tank is recessed inside, so we still made the best use of the scarce space. And the sprinkler system has a fun gimmick: the sprinkler tank is encased as a Budweiser beer."

No challenges

In terms of scheduling and accessibility, Mommersteeg said there were some concerns. "Normally the tank is outside, so you can start with the tank whenever you want. But because the tank was now indoors and the sprinklers and roof had to be above it, it was a bit more complicated. But because of our long-term cooperation with Heembouw, we know exactly where we stand, and that works very nicely."
