Concrete work NAC Stadium was work for specialists

A challenging combination of wet and precast concrete work, which had to be coordinated and realized in a short period of time. The realization of the grandstand expansion for NAC Breda clearly required specialists such as Schepens Betonwerken.

At Schepens Betonwerken, the love of concrete began in 1928. The trade was then passed on from generation to generation. Once started with one concrete mixer, Schepens Betonwerken has now grown into a high-quality partner in structural concrete works in Vessem, with a precast plant in Eersel. From these locations, the Rat Verlegh Stadium of NAC Breda was also realized.

In just twelve weeks, more than 1,500 additional grandstand seats were created.

Accepted with pleasure

The contract came rolling in for Schepens Betonwerken through regular partner Bouwbedrijf Vrolijk, with whom the concrete company previously realized several industrial halls in Hazeldonk, an XXL warehouse for DSV at Logistiek Park Moerdijk and the expansion for Hanos-ISPC in Breda. “For the NAC Stadium, Bouwbedrijf Vrolijk asked if we wanted and could take on the challenge of realizing the concrete works for the grandstand expansion in a very short construction time,” says Remco Hendrikx, director of Schepens Betonwerken. “From formwork to reinforcement and concrete delivery. A challenge we gladly accepted. We coordinated the execution and planning with the contractor, precast concrete supplier Preco and groundwork company W. Huijbregts, after which assembly work started a short time later.”

Wet and precast concrete assembly

In this project, Schepens Betonwerken was responsible for both wet and precast concrete assembly. “We first provided the tubular steel piles with wet concrete and reinforcement,” says Hendrikx. “Then we started the phased realization of approximately 110 m3 of foundations, where we successively installed the formwork, delivered and installed the reinforcement and poured the wet concrete using our own lifting equipment. In addition, we plotted all the cuttings for the precast connections with Total Station and welded them in the correct position, after which we prefabricated the stand.”

An average of about 10 to 12 professionals from Schepens Betonwerken worked on the new stand.

High quality, short construction time

The precast parts were all placed on skids by Preco in front of the stadium, after which they were driven in just-in-time by Schepens Betonwerken and placed in the right places. “Then the whole thing was finished systematically and meter by meter,” Hendrikx said. “Partly due to the quick switching of foreman J. Romme, the necessary logistical support was well organized. There was continuous consultation with all construction partners to keep quality as high and construction time as short as possible.”

Impressive result

An average of about ten to twelve professionals from Schepens Betonwerken worked on the new stand. “They worked shifts of ten hours a day. Moreover, we worked through the weekends, so that all the work could be carried out exactly within NAC Breda's summer break,” Hendrikx concludes. “In just twelve weeks, over 1,500 extra grandstand seats were realized. This required a great deal of concentration and coordination, but with this expansion as an impressive result.”
