As specialists in conceiving and developing complex metal staircase structures, elevator shafts, fencing, frames, doors and works of art, there is one priority, says technical director Jeroen Kersten of Kersten Construction. "We deliver custom work in which our passion for metal comes to the fore time and again. A passion for material, engineering and assembly throughout the company."
For example, Kersten can still get excited about hoisting in prefabricated staircase structures, such as recently on the top floors of the Zalmhaven Tower in Rotterdam, or in the national monumental Station Post Building in The Hague. "We work with our own assembly staff as standard, and they, like me, are passionate about the end result. The challenge of just-in-time assembly through a window or roof opening is as important to us as engineering a staircase structure under architecture." This approach is part of the solid foundation of a proud family business: with an eye for people and customization and attention to detail. "We expect the same from the assembly staff - not our own people for nothing," says Kersten, a member of the second generation.
As the company's founder, Kersten's father once started with Centraal Beheer's headquarters in Apeldoorn. Since then, the company has had a steady relationship with Hertzberger firm, among others. "That architectural scope has been expanded in the next generation." The number of projects under architecture is legion, from spiral staircases in Corten steel in Erasmus MC, through 20-ton stairs in the new Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen to vide spanning stair constructions in office building Hourglass at the Zuidas. "Even there, elements had to enter through a small facade opening," Kersten let slip just to be sure. The company always has a practical basic attitude based on client demand: extensive stair constructions of a more functional nature, such as the ArenA's grandstand stairs, also come from Kersten.
The attitude toward the concept of sustainability is equally clear. Feasibility is paramount, so Kersten Constructie derives the energy requirements for 80% from solar collectors, installed on its premises in Amsterdam-North. "Of course, within the framework of BREEAM, we also take construction weight into account, and in the production chain we work within NEN and ISO standards; we can meet all requirements." A high-quality specialism in metal means that Kersten is called upon for more than just stair constructions; also for fencing, balustrades, elevator shaft constructions, doors, window frames and facade cladding. Produced in our own factory, assembled, post-treated, galvanized or powder coated and offered within a wide range of chain activities. From design, engineering and assembly logistics to assembly. "We are never afraid to be involved in a project organization for a longer period of time and to face challenges together with a customized approach that takes care of the client," Kersten concludes.
