Karel 2.0 Amsterdam

During construction projects, problems are often discovered during the process. Such was the case with the construction of apartment complex Karel 2.0 in Amsterdam. The culprit: the weight. In the initial design, a facade of precast concrete with a masonry wall was planned, but this turned out to be too heavy. Where normally the design would have to be modified, Knauf's consultants came up with a solution: AQUAPANEL® Cementboard Outdoor.

Alternative construction

For Karel 2.0, Knauf came up with an alternative construction: HSB elements topped with AQUAPANEL® Cementboard Outdoor. This lighter construction offered several advantages. Not only did it solve the weight problem, but the slimmer facade also provided additional living space - a valuable addition in downtown Amsterdam, where people know that every square meter counts. Moreover, the combination of prefabricated HSB elements and in-situ assembled AQUAPANEL® panels allowed construction to be completed faster, without additional costs or delays.

Cementitious slabs

The Knauf AQUAPANEL® system, which consists of cement boards, screws, grout materials and plaster finishes, has proven to be a durable and reliable solution in numerous projects. An essential component of this system are the AQUAPANEL® Cement Boards. These cement-based boards are not only waterproof, moisture-insensitive and mold-resistant, but also non-combustible. But what makes the boards unique is their flexibility - literally. In fact, these boards can be bent to a one-meter radius, offering architects unprecedented design freedom. GO Buiksloterham 

A new eye-catcher in the streetscape of Amsterdam North is the striking GO Buiksloterham building. The design by Sophie Valla Architects combines work and living spaces and is characterized by a pronounced facade made largely of glass. Behind the green, transparent facade elements, Knauf AQUAPANEL® Cement Boards form the waterproof underlay of the facade and provide a solid foundation that is resistant to moisture, mold and fire. Throughout the project, Knauf supported with detailed advice, focusing on connections at window frames, expansion joints and other façade elements.
