The two companies have been working together for years, says designer Willem Sterkenburg of Klimaatservice Holland. "De Vries en Verburg asked us to take on this project as partners. In three sessions, together with the client himself, the architect, the building physics consultant and the structural engineer, there was soon a preliminary design. This design ultimately held up quite well. Each party was allowed to name its vision or ambition for this building, unencumbered by any restrictions. This freedom led to nice solutions and to a circular building."
One of Klimaatservice Holland's proposals was to reuse water, and that plan is being implemented. The roof will be used as rainwater storage (retention roof). A rainwater manager will arrange for its controlled discharge to a storage tank in the grounds. Sterkenburg: "There will also be a helophyte filter, which purifies wastewater for reuse. This is how we achieve a cycle of water and that is really special. At this property, the sewer system is only used for the overflow from the buffer tank."
The building will be constructed entirely of wood. It is up to Klimaatservice Holland to guarantee a good indoor climate here. "The architect wanted a transparent facade as much as possible. To maintain indoor comfort and limit the cooling power required, the function of the canopy is to keep out the sun in summer. It was also a desire of the architect to continue to see as much wood as possible. Therefore, climate islands were chosen for cooling and heating. The piping and ductwork of the ventilation system is in the raised floor, so we can place the installation between the floors. In addition, we use ground energy. A closed system will be installed for this and there will be heat pumps with propane as the refrigerant." This system was devised together with the installation consultant.
Pearl in the Polder is not a big project for Klimaatservice Holland, but it is notable. "It is a wooden building, the cooperation in the design phase was nice and the building is very sustainable. It even gets the BREEAM certification 'Outstanding'. All in all, a fine collaboration that tastes like more."
