Flawless dimensions as the foundation for extraordinary transformation

Repurposing old silos is challenging and inspiring. Everything has to fit perfectly, preferably with the lowest possible failure costs. Reason enough for Vink Bouw to involve Fund Groep from Vianen in such special projects, such as the transformation of the silos on Zeeburgereiland. Dimensions and 3D scanning play a central role in the transformation of the silos on Zeeburgereiland. “Because this is an area development project, we started by making a complete drone survey of the surroundings,” says Hagg. “Vink Bouw is using these images to optimize the site layout, the logistics plan, the soil balance, and, of course, to create beautiful images.”

Point cloud

Next, the construction site and surrounding buildings were scanned with millimeter precision using a Z+F 3D scanner. Hagg: “This scan produces an extremely accurate point cloud that we can use to check the existing situation and clash the design model.
The scanner also generates high-resolution color photos, which are a valuable visual addition to documentation and communication. For example, thanks to this up-to-date and reliable data, the steel constructor can engineer its components properly. The fixed reference points that we recorded during the scan are used specifically by our surveyor for setting out on site. The complete 3D scan is used more broadly and forms an important foundation for the design and implementation process.”

Flawless scanning is essential

3D scanning of the silos themselves was a crucial step. “When designing and installing complex steel structures, a crystal-clear scan is indispensable,” explains Hagg. “If you do this based on theoretical data or old construction drawings from back then, you will encounter high failure costs later in the process. With up-to-date, accurate data, you get reliable 3D models and make failure costs manageable. Our data provides contractors, architects, structural engineers, and steel fabricators with accurate and up-to-date starting points for design and engineering. We also perform as-built checks of the rising work with our Flexscan from Z+F, which corresponds almost seamlessly with the static scan, but is much faster and can be done on the go.”

Everything from the 3D model

In the next phase, Fund Groep will be responsible for marking out various components that will be added to the silos. “Grids alone are not sufficient in a round silo,” emphasizes Hagg. “Detailed measurements are indispensable in renovation projects. Our experienced dimensioner Edwin Dame has already successfully provided dimensions for many renovation projects. He has laid out this project both on the outside and the inside. Among other things, he used an aerial work platform, which allowed him to position himself in hard-to-reach places to accurately indicate all dimensions. Accurate and efficient dimensioning and thinking along with the client are central to this. Together with our client Vink Bouw, we work from 3D models: Revit or IFC. The models are delivered and prepared for use by our work planner. Our dimensioner then sets out all this efficiently and accurately, directly from his tablet.”
