Technical masterpiece on the Woudestein campus

Facade builder JM van Delft & zn from Drunen will soon start installation work for the renovation of the Tinbergen Building on the Woudestein campus of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The striking building, named after economist and Nobel Prize winner Jan Tinbergen, is undergoing a thorough renovation to prepare it for the future. The character of the original design will be retained, while the building will be fitted with high-quality, sustainable facade elements and given a modern look.

At the end of November, the facade builder will start replacing the existing window strips with new aluminum frames. This work will be carried out in phases per floor, so that the renovation can take place carefully and with minimal disruption. This requires precise customization, tight construction logistics, and good coordination with the other disciplines on the construction site. With its extensive experience in renovations within educational and university environments, JM van Delft & zn ensures that the surrounding activities on campus can continue safely and undisturbed.

In addition to renovating the existing building, the project includes an impressive expansion: two extra floors will be added to the building. These additional floors will be fitted with slender steel curtain walls, which will create a transparent and light architectural appearance. The engineering of these facades is currently in full swing. The installation of the curtain walls on the high-rise sections of the building poses a particular technical challenge. A suspended scaffold will be used around the building to enable safe and effective working at height. In addition, a SmartLift will be positioned on the roof of the extension, allowing the glass panels to be installed in the curtain wall from above. This method offers optimal control and safety during glazing at great heights.

The renovation of the Tinbergen Building is therefore not only a refurbishment, but also an example of innovative construction and collaboration. Commissioned by Heerkens van Bavel, JM van Delft & zn is proud to contribute to the future-proof campus of Erasmus University. An exciting project that will be in full swing in the coming months.
