Nature in the middle of the city: the residential towers of Wonderwoods make it come true. This green oasis where living, working and recreation are central, will become a real city icon. Naturally recognizable by the greenery, but also by the warm, luxurious look of the hardwood ceilings and facades. Marcel van der Horst and Marc Hesen of ZND Nedicom talk with great passion and pleasure about how the company goes about achieving this warm appearance.
ZND Nedicom of Asten specializes in supplying and assembling facade solutions. "What we do? We assemble everything that sits against a facade. Whether it's aluminum, wood or sandwich panels: we always provide the right type of material," says work planner Van der Horst. ZND Nedicom has built a solid reputation in the facade and roofing world with more than 40 years of experience. And that expertise came in handy at Wonderwoods, where the company is responsible for the wooden ceilings and facades.
Construction on Wonderwoods began in 2022. Hesen, co-responsible for sales at ZND Nedicom, says: "Clients Boele & van Eesteren and Kondor Wessels Amsterdam were looking for the best wooden cladding. So we gave the necessary advice and offered different types of wood. We built two mock-up balconies and eventually the choice fell on the Forestlines system from Paulussen houthandel from Belgium, with the African wood species Okan." This type of wood combined with aluminum profiles meets fire class B, without the need for additional treatment.
During construction, ZND Nedicom supplied and assembled not only the wooden Okan panels for the ceilings and facades, but also the rear structures, infill structures and aluminum profiles placed between the wooden sections. Hesen continues: "We supplied 8,000 square meters of Forestline ceiling cladding and 4,000 meters of wood finger-welded slats. Factory finger-welding made the slats very strong, which we used to make them into longer lengths. These now hang vertically on the facade."
The result is a unique combination of wood and greenery that gives Wonderwoods an iconic look. The natural, golden brown hue of the Okan wood matches perfectly with the green planting on the balconies, creating a warm and luxurious appearance. Moreover, this is the first major project in the Netherlands where the Forestlines system has been applied. ZND Nedicom is proud of the final result. "When you look at the towers now, you can't help but be proud," says Hesen. "We have built something beautiful with our team, despite the logistical challenges. The transportation system, planning and cooperation with the general contractor all went smoothly." Hesen adds, "When you look at Wonderwoods, you still think, 'We made that as a company!' We love doing these kinds of complex, luxury facade projects. Because if it's a challenge, we like it!"
