Rembrandt Park One: sustainable & open

The old Ringpark office block from the 1960s on Nachtwachtlaan in Amsterdam Nieuw-West will be transformed in two years into Rembrandt Park One: a vibrant site for offices, including a restaurant, coffee bar and gym. The building will have two additional floors and will most likely be awarded the BREAAM Excellent certificate for sustainability. The design is characterized by lots of glass, light and stunning views. In short: anything but a standard office colossus.

Connection, openness and accessibility

Since 1967, Rembrandt Park One - formerly Ringpark - has occupied a prominent place between the A10 highway and the Rembrandt Park in Amsterdam West. As such, it also functions as a kind of wall between the park and Amsterdam New West. After the renovation, the building will be completely transformed into an open, light and accessible workplace.

In the building, "connection" will be a central theme, which will be shaped by creating different routes and passages between East and West, the park and the city, work and leisure. In addition, there will be a glass pavilion on the waterfront, in order to breathe new life into the building.

Sustainable ambitions for Rembrandt Park One

In addition to openness and connection, sustainability is paramount in this project. Architectenbureau HofmanDujardin is responsible for the sustainable design of the building, commissioned by real estate developer Boelens de Gruyter and Round Hill Capital, which will eventually have to achieve a BREEAM Excellent certificate. The office floors will be completely gutted and renovated in a sustainable manner. Eventually, the building's total of 24,000 square meters will house a variety of companies - from startups to multinationals, including a coffee bar, restaurant and gym.

Unexpected challenges and appropriate solutions

The main challenge for the renovation project is to find budget-neutral solutions to unexpected situations - which will almost always occur. Work planner Erwin, a regular Velox colleague, is only too happy to bite into these kinds of unexpected surprises.

Erwin, as the only hired worker, enjoys working on the project very much. "The project manager leaves you free to do your own thing. Colleagues are always ready to spar. I feel like one of them," he indicates. The modern furnished construction shack, with nice views of the adjacent Rembrandt Park, is one of the pluses. "Good light, good coffee, sit-stand desks for everyone. They don't even have those in many office buildings. When I compare that to the construction huts I used to go to with my father, they were blue with smoke and full of dilapidated furniture."
