Video Peutz & WEBO: fire class B in HSB, the trap of loose material testing

Video Peutz & WEBO: fire class B in HSB, the pitfall of loose material testing

Separate material tests do not automatically say anything about the fire rating of a complete prefabricated HSB wall element. At fire class B is all about the total structure: materials, connections, fastening, frames and façade finishing. This is precisely where discussions about the underpinnings frequently arise in projects.

Therefore, we have Peutz and WEBO created a video practically explaining this pitfall. Harm Leenders, Head of Laboratory for Fire Safety at Peutz, and Jan Nijmeijer, Manager of Quality & Innovation at WEBO, explain why fire behavior is not only at the material level, but at the system level, or end-use, must be assessed. This clarifies why separate reports do not automatically show that a complete HSB façade element meets the requirements around fire class B.

The City Store, Fibonacci and Houtrak

That systems approach is reflected in projects such as The City Store, Fibonacci and Houtrak. At De Stadswinkel in Tilburg are HSB facade elements combined with Accoya®-frames, fraké cladding and CE marked fireproof frames. At Fibonacci in Amsterdam, the combination of atrium application, energy performance and fire class B played a role. At Houtrak in Amsterdam, prefabricated HSB facade elements with wooden NOM window frames and circular azobé cladding from old sheet pile walls were chosen.

Whitepaper and fire class B classification reports

In addition to the video, there is a whitepaper available with practical depth for contractors, job planners and project teams. Read more in the white paper:

  • Large residential and commercial construction projects
  • Engineering in BIM
  • Fast delivery times
  • Combining with window frames
  • Rc value 4.7 - 8.0 m²-K/W

You will also receive additional classification reports for façade finishes with mineral bricks, solar panels and Azobé (Vront®).

Video series Peutz & WEBO on fire safety in construction

This video is part of a seven-part series in which Peutz and WEBO explain fire safety in practical terms. The series deepens the concepts burning behavior, fire resistance and smoke resistance, as well as showing where they differ in practice.

The focus is on window frames and HSB wall elements, where material level, system level and application come together. This is also relevant for fire and smoke resistant window frames such as Refractory®, with connection and detailing determining demonstrability.
