Platform on new construction, renovation, restoration and transformation
The expansion of artisan butcher Kaldenberg in Vuren, to three times its current capacity and with the ‘store’ open, requires a general contractor who is not only technically strong, but also accustomed to building in a complex environment. Cornelissen Contracting Company fulfills that role with flying colors. “Our experience with the first phase in 2016 provides a strong foundation for this new expansion,” said director Michiel van Summeren.
With over 140 professionals, Cornelissen contracting company has been active in nonresidential construction for many years, with a strong focus on new construction, renovation and expansion projects in sectors such as the (food) industry, retail, residential care and hospitals. “Our strength lies in the successful realization of particularly complex projects in which flexibility, expert knowledge and close cooperation with clients are key,” Van Summeren says. “Our contribution to the expansion of Slagerijen Kaldenberg underscores that expertise.”
Cornelissen contracting company is acting as the general contractor for the complete construction portion. “That includes the steel construction, concrete floors, facade finishes and coordination with all other parties,” Van Summeren explains. The expansion consists of a large cold store with a new freezer cell, two additional docks and a modern canteen. “Building a cold store is a profession in itself. It requires specialist knowledge of insulation, thermal bridge breaks, detailing and specific construction of walls, facades and roof sheeting. For example, we work with an inverted floor construction, which keeps temperature fluctuations under control. Our experience in this segment means that we know exactly how to tackle this kind of technical special.”
“On this project, too, we make a difference with our knowledge and a strong sense of commitment,” said Van Summeren. “This is deeply embedded in our corporate DNA. We work a lot in construction teams and use open budgets. This means that we don't wait and see, but think proactively, signal in time and pull the cart when necessary. Always focused on the importance of the project.” Production in the butcher shop continues as usual during construction. “That requires tight agreements and discipline on the construction site. This is why we work via a separate logistics route: our people use a separate construction entrance to completely spare the production process. Order, tidiness and respect for the client's shop floor are key. Our own professionals know that they are guests and act accordingly.”
The expansion will take place on a tight industrial site that will be completely built up. “That makes logistical planning essential,” Van Summeren emphasizes. “In addition, the subsoil consists of loam and clay, which meant we had to invest in smart site design. Among other things, we work with stelcon plates and keep the construction site clean and orderly even in the shell construction phase.” Simultaneous construction and engineering was necessary to meet the opening date. “This is only possible with clear planning, intensive consultation and making the right choices at the right time.”
The expansion of Slagerijen Kaldenberg is not the only project Cornelissen contracting company currently has in progress. “Among other things, we are building a large food factory in Odiliapeel, making an expansion at Aviko's plant in Oostrum and building for several food-related clients such as Sligro, for whom we have been active for forty years. We also realize care homes, OR centers, fire stations and various other specials in which business continuity and complexity come together. Regardless of the project, our approach remains the same: committed, expert and focused on long-term client relationships,” Van Summeren concludes.
