Drilling penetrations, installing valve adapters, underlaying them with a board and finishing them takes a while. That should be easier, they thought at Ubbink. Why not pour the valve adapters directly into the floor? Together with Kuipers bouwmaterialen- en steenhandel, Nijhuis Bouw and installation company Aalbers, they started a pilot project at the apartments of the Dierenriemstraat in Groningen.
The valve adapters of the Ubbink Air Excellent air distribution system were prefabricated into the concrete of the wide slab floor and connected to flexible hoses that could easily be extended under the lattice girder. "We worked out the idea together," says Marcel Beune, technical project manager at Ubbink. "All parties agreed that we could save a lot of work and time with this. Nijhuis Bouw also wanted to try it."
Thanks to the prefabricated work, no drilling or cutting was required. Stamping, stucco and plastering could be omitted, and yet it looked neat and tidy right away. "It's important, though, that everyone prepares the work in BIM," Beune continues. "The location of the valve nozzle, reinforcement and lattice beam of the concrete must be accurately matched."
"It's an egg of Columbus. When you bring out an invention like this, everyone says 'Ah, of course.' But come on. Ubbink is the first and only one in the Netherlands to do it this way. This is also right up our street. We are always looking for products and working methods that facilitate and improve our work. Call it "smart plug & play systems. With these collapsed valve adapters, we have certainly found another one."
