Van den Pol Elektrotechniek was previously involved in the Curie laboratory building (formerly: Grizzly) at Pivot Park in Oss, also a project with architect Proof of the sum. “This complex has many similarities to Plus Ultra III,” explains project manager Roelf van Wolfswinkel. “Hence the architectural firm recommended us here.”
Van den Pol previously worked on a Kadans project: the shell new building for biotech company Genmab in Utrecht. And the WUR campus is also familiar territory. “We recently renewed the fire alarm system in two atriums with a striking solution: hanging from ropes, climbers attached sensors at great height.”
Unlike many other new construction projects, Plus Ultra III features a substantial grid connection. “The building consists of four parts. Each has a shaft with a 600 ampere busbar sleeve. Per floor this branches off to the tenants” distributors.“ Van den Pol is responsible for the complete electrical installation. ”From the transformer to the last socket and including lighting, fire alarm system and PV installation. For the tenants who are now known, we also install additional facilities."
The more than 400 solar panels - a key element in BREEAM Excellent certification - will not all fit on the building. “Therefore, they are partially placed on the parking garage. Feed-in is not yet possible here. Therefore, inverters are ‘pinched off’ if more green power is generated than is needed.”
Timber construction is an important feature of Plus Ultra III. Van den Pol is increasingly executing such projects. “Think of the wooden new construction of Redwell and Pearl in the Polder for construction company De Vries en Verburg. Also noteworthy is certainly SAWA, the first wooden residential complex more than 50 meters high. A first, just like Plus Ultra III, which is the first laboratory in wood.”
What impact does wood construction have for an electrical specialist like Van den Pol? “The preliminary process takes a little more time,” says Van Wolfswinkel. “For example, determining the locations for cutouts listens closely. When it comes to execution, there are definitely advantages. Drilling or milling is not necessary, so there is no dust and noise. Working in wood is faster, cleaner and quieter. This makes our mechanics happy: wood construction adds to our job satisfaction.”
