Drilling, milling and demolition in multiple construction streams

The drilling, milling and demolition work for the Louis Armstrong & Elvis Presley flat in Zwolle is being carried out by Kwakkel. Because of the different construction flows at two locations, this chain partner has to schedule the work in such a way that it fits seamlessly with the work of other parties such as the tiler and installer. Moreover, it is usually in the lead and is therefore responsible for the correct flow of all succeeding parties.

To be as prepared as possible, Kwakkel first performed all the drilling, milling and demolition work in three model homes. That way she knew what to expect. Starting in Week 35, she worked continuously on the second through 11th floors of the Louis Armstrong apartment building at a rate of two homes per day. "The work for the homes is divided into two streams," says Gerard Koobs, Kwakkel's business manager. "We are first tackling the kitchens, toilets and part of the shaft. In a new construction stream, we renovate the bathrooms and remove radiators and pipes."

"The work on the ground and second floors is pretty rigorous," Koobs continued. "The storerooms are moving from the second floor to the first floor and on the second floor there will be housing. For us, this means we have to demolish almost everything on the second floor. Only the structure will remain virtually standing. On the first floor, we are also demolishing concrete walls. The existing entrances, four in total, will be demolished. So here we perform a piece of total demolition. Elsewhere we are making recesses in the upper floor for the voids at the location of the new entrances." Kwakkel's work will continue until the end of 2022.
