25 years of light, visibility and comfort in the Netherlands. Specialist in glass facade solutions celebrates silver anniversary

In 2026, Solarlux Netherlands will celebrate its 25th anniversary. A quarter century in which the company developed from a pioneer in glass folding walls to a full-fledged partner in the field of flexible glass facade solutions. The product range now includes conservatories, garden rooms and balcony glazing that are continuously innovated, expanded and tested. All this to guarantee maximum transparency and smooth transitions between inside and outside, with an eye for technical details, design and comfort.

Solarlux was founded in 1983 in Melle, near Osnabrück (D). The family business now has about a thousand committed employees, who have signed on to more than 18,000 projects worldwide. “Initially, we sold our products through Germany to mainly Dutch resellers,” says senior account manager André Jansen. “But soon there were questions from architects and contractors. There was a need for Dutch product information and a local point of contact who thought about technical details.” Meanwhile, the Dutch team consists of thirty employees, with project managers, work planners and its own assembly department in addition to sales. “An essential difference from many system suppliers. We do not sell individual profiles, but deliver a total concept - from advice to assembly and aftercare. For an architect, that means a single point of contact and the assurance that his design will actually be realized as intended.”

Talking projects

Over the past 25 years, Solarlux has been involved in numerous high-profile projects by leading architects. Like The Valley, MVRDV's iconic design on the Zuidas in Amsterdam, which was named ‘Best skyscraper in the world’ in 2023. “The Valley shows that urban densification and quality of life can go extremely well together,” says Jansen. “Our folding walls here provide maximum daylighting and connection between home and outdoor space.” Solarlux also played a key role at ODE Apartments, designed by UNStudio as part of Booking.com's City Campus. “Here, the challenge was to realize large areas of glass that not only provide light and views, but also meet strict insulation and wind and water tightness requirements. With the Piazzaflat in Gorinchem, we are also proving that - in addition to new construction - we are also strong in renovation and transformation projects.”

Innovative products

In recent years, Solarlux's efforts have also led to numerous innovative products. “Responding to the increasing demands for permanent ventilation combined with soundproofing, we have developed a modular balcony glazing concept that has already been applied to the Ottho and Crossroads projects by MVSA architects in Amsterdam.” Another special development is cero, whose popularity has exceeded all expectations. “Our minimalist cero sliding system has been providing seamless transitions between inside and outside for years. With the system, sliding elements as large as 4×6 m and maximum sash areas of up to about 15 m2 are possible, with a maximum weight of 1,000 kg per sash! The system has long guaranteed 98% glass area and transparency, but has recently been given even slimmer appearance widths. Whereas cero II is based on double glazing and cero III on triple glazing, cero IV is distinguished by the Structural Glazing effect. The bell jar is almost invisible and the horizontal sash view is only 34 mm. Because the sash frames are vertical with a glass overlap, we create even more glass surface and an even more elegant building appearance, without sacrificing (insulation) performance. This is truly unprecedented in building architecture.”

Sustainable initiatives

According to Jansen, the facade of the future is slim, narrow and transparent. But also perfectly wind and watertight and thermally insulating, minimizing the CO2 impact. “Moreover, sustainability and circularity are becoming increasingly important. A great initiative in this context is the addition of Red Grandis to our wood range.” Red Grandis is the brand name of Eucalyptus wood from northern Uruguay. “A unique feature of the tree is that it is ready to harvest after only 24 years, whereas oak, for example, takes up to 100 years. So Red Grandis grows considerably faster, but is at least as durable and has excellent insulation value. Moreover, the wood can be finished very smoothly, which makes it ideally suited for facade joinery.”

Office of the future

Sustainability and energy efficiency was also the starting point during the design and construction of Solarlux Netherlands“ new Comfort Office in 2020. In cooperation with TU Delft, a concept was developed that refrained as much as possible from technical climate control and artificial workplace lighting. ”The result is a building with a sustainable climate concept characterized by transparency and openness. With our SL Co2mfort façade, our headquarters meets all the challenges of the office of the future, putting the user first and minimizing energy consumption and CO2 emissions."

The double façade concept fits the changing role of users ideally. “Buildings should not only be energy efficient, but also healthy and pleasant to stay in,” Jansen concludes. “Daylight, fresh air and flexibility are essential for this. We respond to this directly with our solutions.”
