On the site of the former Smarius bread and cookie factory, a new, green urban neighborhood is being developed with approximately 721 homes and a strong focus on nature-inclusive design, a pleasant living environment, and sustainable mobility: Smariuskade. The project was designed with an eye toward sustainability and energy efficiency. The electrical systems installed by Van Hees Elektrotechniek & ICT make a significant contribution to this.
Smariuskade is being developed by Van de Ven Bouw en Ontwikkeling B.V., for whom Van Hees Elektrotechniek & ICT previously completed the Post Breda project. “About three years ago, we were invited to join the construction team for Smariuskade,” says Rob Smits, Residential Construction Manager at Van Hees Elektrotechniek & ICT. “Together with the general contractor and based on the specifications, we further developed and optimized the electrical installation. For example, we optimized the lighting fixture plan by selecting fixtures that offer more sophisticated dimming capabilities and are also more cost-effective.”
Earlier this year, Van Hees Elektrotechniek & ICT began work on the electrical installations for Building G (Levain): a modern residential building with 110 apartments, says Smits. “The name Levain—French for sourdough—is a nice nod to the past, when bread baking played a central role. In this way, history remains subtly woven into the new living environment.” For both Building Section G and the upcoming subprojects, Van Hees is installing reliable, safe, and energy-efficient systems that combine modern living comfort with a high degree of future-proofing. “Following the installation of the electrical and power systems, we are implementing an access control system with a video intercom, as well as fire alarm systems in the residences. In addition, the buildings may be equipped with PV panels.”
In addition to sustainable techniques, Smariuskade makes a conscious effort to use sustainably produced and recycled materials—including in its electrical systems. As an example, Smits cites the electrical switches and PVC pipes, which contain a significant percentage of recycled material.
“Our collaboration with Van de Ven Bouw & Ontwikkeling BV is characterized by direct communication, craftsmanship, and a shared ambition: to deliver quality we can be proud of,” Smits concludes. “For us, this project is a great example of what we at Van Hees Elektrotechniek & ICT stand for: committed, professional, and focused on sustainable solutions.”
