Aluminum fascia gives Unity Office a sleek and modern look

On the edge of former business area the Binckhorst, the new, more than 48,000 m2 headquarters of the Hague Police Department is rising. The design of the new building blends seamlessly with the existing urban character of the area. Architectenbureau cepezed designed an all-sided building with a high degree of transparency, in which the dark-colored BEMO aluminum fascia boards from Kempen Cladding provide a beautiful contrast.

Kempen Cladding supplies and installs roof and wall cladding and roofing in the broadest sense of the word. Among other things, the company specializes in standing seam facades, which guarantee a modern and durable building finish and a sleek facade appearance. “We were approached by cepezed as early as the design phase, to help think about the facade detailing for the so-called Unity Office,” says Han Stadt, Business Development Manager at Kempen Cladding. “A tender followed, on the basis of which we were commissioned by BAM Bouw en Techniek to engineer and assemble approximately 4,800 m2 of BEMO N65-305 aluminum standing seam systems.” For the facades, fascia boards in a matte black Gabbro Crinkle textured coating were chosen, while for the patios, clear anodized aluminum was used.

“Thanks to the narrow lanes, we can follow the curve of the building very nicely and smoothly.”

Extremely sleek and durable

The choice of a seamed façade in this project is a logical one, according to Stadt. “A standing seam façade consists of seamed profiles with, in this case, a project-specific width of 305 and 335 mm,” he says. “Thanks to these narrow strips, we can follow the curve of the building very nicely and smoothly. Segmentations in the facade appearance are not an issue, while a blind fastening with mounting clips ensures an extremely tight facade appearance. In addition, expansion and contraction of the aluminum profiled sheets are perfectly accommodated.” In terms of dimensions, the profiled sheets correspond very nicely to the long and narrow window sections, he says. “Last but not least, aluminum 100% is recyclable, meeting the high BREEAM ambition in this project.”

Neat window connections

Special attention was paid to detailing to ensure a neat fit between the standing seam and window sections. “Felsbanen have a small bead on the one hand and a large bead on the other, which fit nicely over each other,” Stadt clarified. “When you build up the facades in this way, however, you don't end up nicely at the windows on the left and right. We solved this in part with the use of fascia boards with two large beads. Because this solution, in combination with the long window sections, is not sufficiently storm-proof, we also developed a small flange with a detail that protrudes into the day side especially for this project. In this way, both sides have a small bead, over which a large bead is seamed and with which the required storm-proofing is achieved. In addition, this creates identical window connections on the left and right, taking technical quality and aesthetics to the highest level.”

Continued in the parking building

The fascia boards at the location of the indoor parking garage for service vehicles have been given a specific perforation, so that the supply of fresh air and exhaust of flue gases is also guaranteed, says Stadt. “Without disturbing the facade appearance.” The perforated fascia strips are also being used in the former Police Academy building further down the street, which will serve as a parking garage for the Unity Office.
