Steenhuis Bukman Architects Continues to Build the Future

Steenhuis Bukman Architects (SBA) is strengthening its leadership team with the addition of Jeffrey Reule and Martijne Draaisma. Jeffrey has joined the firm as an associate. Martijne, who has been with Steenhuis Bukman Architects since 2007, has been appointed office manager. Together with Marc Bukman, they will lead the firm.

The firm is preparing for a new phase. It builds on 37 years of experience in architecture, urban planning, sustainable renovation, and the creation of meaningful living environments. This new phase marks both the continuity and the further development of SBA. This expansion creates opportunities to further enhance the firm’s quality and identity and to infuse new energy and perspectives into the design practice.

Experience as a foundation, innovation as a driving force

Over the past few decades, SBA has built a distinctive portfolio. Architectural quality, construction craftsmanship, and a focus on the built environment and its users form an important foundation for this portfolio. That experience is the cornerstone. At the same time, the world in which we build is changing rapidly. The housing challenge, making existing cities more sustainable, changing lifestyles, and resident engagement call for proactive professionals who look beyond the building itself. From designer to connector, collaborator, construction process facilitator, and co-creator of meaningful living environments.

As an architectural BIM expert, Martijne Draaisma brings a broad range of knowledge about the firm and its projects to the table. In her new role as office manager, she focuses, among other things, on the connection between design, engineering, and construction. “I want to help ensure that the quality we envision at the drawing board is also evident in the building and in everyday practice.”

With Jeffrey Reule, the firm is strengthening its capabilities in the areas of architectural design and research. His experience includes sustainable housing, communal gathering spaces, and participatory processes. “I’m interested in how we can learn from the city and its history, as well as from building types that have been forgotten but offer interesting possibilities for sustainable living environments.”

In addition to his work at SBA, Jeffrey is the chair of DelftDesign and teaches as a design and research instructor at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture. He brings this combination of professional practice, research, and teaching to the firm’s continued development.

A name with a history and a future

The name “Steenhuis” in the firm’s name refers to Roelf Steenhuis, who helped shape the firm’s identity. Although he has not been involved in day-to-day operations for quite some time, his name remains closely linked to the firm’s history.

“We’re getting ready for the next step,” says Marc Bukman. “We have a strong and distinctive way of working. That’s exactly why it’s exciting to bring new people, ideas, and responsibilities into the mix.”

Steenhuis Bukman Architects continues to build on its experience, commitment, and expertise, drawing on today’s energy and keeping its sights set on the living environments of tomorrow.
