“We’ve been involved in the project since the tender phase,” says René Jansen, account manager for Glued-Laminated Timber Structures. “That way, we can work together to create a good design and address many issues early on.”
It may seem counterintuitive, but according to Jansen, wood is actually a good choice for a swimming pool. “Wood always adapts to the humidity and temperature of its surroundings. In a swimming pool, both are high, yet you’ll see that wood doesn’t react to them at all.” The material also holds up well against corrosive substances. The structure is made of laminated pine for the indoor areas and laminated larch for the parts that need to be weather-resistant.
The biggest challenge in this project was the shape of the large span. The roof has a bend, and it had to be constructed using a single girder. Such a girder is pressed from thin planks using a press capable of producing a maximum width of 4.20 meters. By working closely with the structural engineer, architect, and contractor to make slight adjustments to the roof pitches and angles, we were able to make it work. The longest laminated beam was nearly 42 meters long and 2 meters high.

As part of the Design & Build team, De Groot Vroomshoop worked with the architect and contractor to find the best solutions at every step. “By engaging in discussions early on, you can directly influence the detailing, ensuring that the production phase and construction go smoothly and resulting in a beautiful final product.”
