A Safely Renewed Dome

Custom-made stainless steel cable nets from Carl Stahl Benelux have been used in the balustrades and stairwells of the Koepel. A total of 500 m2 of cable netting is incorporated into the recently remodeled Koepel.

The old domed prison in Haarlem has been completely renovated. The former prison was recently transformed into a place where office spaces, hospitality and a cinema come together. Despite the Koepel's new purpose, the authenticity of the building has remained visibly intact. To preserve the character while creating a safe environment, the renovation chose to fit the balustrades and stairwells with Carl Stahl's transparent, durable and strong cable netting. As a specialist in the field of safety nets, Carl Stahl, commissioned by Kersten, also provided everything from engineering to assembly on this project. "We like to think along with the customer's wishes. We can calculate everything, produce and our own assembly team finally assembles the cable nets on site for the best quality," says Jennifer Swagers, marketing manager at Carl Stahl.

"Carl Stahl's goal is to create a safe living environment, by applying safety nets mostly in stair and lap holes, balustrades, as a safety net or fencing." The stainless steel cable nets consist of individual stainless steel cables connected by clamps. The cable nets are stretched between an edge cable or tube frame. "In this project, we used cable nets with a mesh size of 40 x 69 x 1.5 mm, which is a common size for balustrades that meets the clearance requirement." So it's ideal for public buildings like the Dome.

Also on the grounds of the Dome is the former women's prison, the Vest. Student housing will soon be built in it. Carl Stahl will also provide the safety nets for this project. These will be mounted in the existing and new railings.
