On the waterfront in Nieuwegein, Tegelzetbedrijf Jaap Smit is collaborating on the prestigious CityPromenade project. Mike Smit, who runs the family business with his father, is proud of their contribution to the 452 homes. Nieuwegein-based tiling company Jaap Smit's work ranges from window sills to complete bathroom finishes. "This project is running like a train," Smit says. "We go to work every day whistling."
Tegelzetbedrijf Jaap Smit, based in Edam, has grown into a reliable player in the construction industry since it was founded by Smit's father 35 years ago. "There are two of us and we hire professionals when necessary. But we always remain on the construction site ourselves," Smit says. This ensures short lines of communication and constant control over quality. "If there is something, we solve it immediately."
At new construction project CityPromenade, Tegelzetbedrijf Jaap Smit is providing the tiling in the common areas, bathrooms and toilets. "In the common areas we use 90 by 90 centimeter tiles with a levelling system for a perfect end result," Smit says. Thanks to this system, the tiles are placed tightly and accurately, contributing to the impressive finish of the buildings.
Tegelzetbedrijf Jaap Smit's success is due in part to its long-term cooperation with contractor Koopmans Bouwgroep. "Johan Kuiper of Koopmans Bouwgroep worked hard for us and put his trust in us from the very first moment," says Smit. This close relationship began with previous projects and is now continuing with CityPromenade. "Koopmans Bouwgroep thinks ahead, such as with its smart time lock system for deliveries, which means everything here is perfectly on schedule." Thanks to Koopmans Bouwgroep's smart logistics system, construction is proceeding smoothly and faster than planned. "I was hesitant at first because of the small worksite and the large number of homes, but that has been perfectly managed," Smit says. The good organization allows him to work without worries. "Not the burdens, just the joys of a big project," he laughs.
Sustainability plays a big role in the work of tiling company Jaap Smit. Together with partners Eurocol and Kras Recycling, father and son are working on a circular construction process. "The glue buckets we use are recycled. We collect them after use, clean them and return them. This saves an enormous amount of unnecessary waste," Smit explains. This approach fits perfectly with Nieuwegein's ambition to create the most sustainable city center in the Netherlands.
With projects such as CityPromenade, Tegelzetbedrijf Jaap Smit proves time and again to be a reliable partner for large-scale construction projects. From luxury tiling to smart sustainable solutions, this family business continues to build for the future. "We do what we promise and in the end that always remains the key to success," Smit concludes.
