In Oosterwold, east of Almere, a new residential neighborhood is being built: 't Groene Wold. The new neighborhood on Goudplevierweg is characterized by its green surroundings and village character, with each block having a different type of brick. A uniform plinth and uniform mortar color ensure unity in diversity.
"The facades of the 372 homes will be bricked with different brick types. From highly absorbent bricks to hydrophobized moderately absorbent bricks," says Jan Jousma, Product Manager at Remix Dry Mortar BV. "One standard mortar is then completely unsuitable and would cause insufficient adhesion, insufficient strength development and a (too) slow bricklaying pace. In order to overcome these problems, we issued mortar recommendations at an early stage and according to our Remix Mortar-Op-Maat® system, which responds perfectly to the properties of the bricks, the desired jointing method and masonry speed, as well as the construction site and weather conditions."
The strike-through method was chosen in 't Groene Wold, says Jousma. "The bricklayers brick full and sat and brush through the mortar with a mortar roller as soon as it has set. Then all they have to do is lightly sweep and the grout is ready, in one working step. Immediately after bricklaying, the scaffolding can already be dismantled, saving construction time and costs. There is also significantly less mortar loss thanks to this method. The masonry/grouting forms a single monolithic whole, so damage to the grouting hardly ever occurs. The result is a high-quality and strong masonry facade with a shorter construction time and a much longer lifespan. Because all of our drive-through mortars have the Dubo seal of approval, the client and processors are also assured of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly mortars."
To bring the appearance of the facades to the highest level, it is important that no white lime efflorescence occurs after bricklaying. "This is why all Remix permeable mortars are low efflorescence (UA)," says Jousma. "A sophisticated package of efflorescence blockers lifts the capillary moisture flow in our mortars. This prevents whitewash on the surface of the masonry." The mortars are supplied to contractor Vastbouw through dealer Raab Karcher. "On the project there are several silos with four different types of anthracite-colored drive-through mortars, which are always refilled by our bulk trucks. Each silo is clearly marked for which type of bricks the specific strike-through mortars should be used. In addition, Remix Account Manager Hans Bouwman is responsible for good advice and site supervision, ensuring smooth execution."
