The renovated University Library of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is not only a beautiful building, but also an example of craftsmanship. Behind the bronze on the special letters on the facade is the work of JC Straaltechniek. "This was a special project that we are very proud of," says co-owner Jan Pieter van der Stelt.
JC Straaltechniek specializes in the blasting and preservation of metals. Although this was not a usual assignment from client Nedcam, JC Straaltechniek took up the challenge with both hands. The letters adorning the University Library were sprayed with verometal. Van der Stelt explains: "Our job was to check, coat and then spray the 3D printed letters in a special bronze color with a product from verometal. Certainly not a usual job; in fact, the small letters required a lot of attention to detail."
The distinguishing factor in this project? The use of verometal. Unlike regular paint, verometal requires a completely different process. "When using verometal, you spray pure metal. Then, through a complex step-by-step process, it is given a copper-colored appearance," says Van der Stelt. The process was new to JC Straaltechniek and presented some challenges. "We had to apply the paint metal carefully. Every step in the process, from patination to glass bead blasting of the copper, required precision and patience."
It was a large and challenging project for JC Straaltechniek. "We processed a total of 588 letter lines and another 200 fitting pieces," says Van der Stelt. It was important that each letter received the same finish, and that worked out well. "The quality of the end result was very important. And we are incredibly proud of the final result." The cooperation between the various parties was excellent, he concludes. "The customer is satisfied, and in the end that's what we do it for." The special letters with the finish by JC Straaltechniek can now be admired on the UvA's iconic University Library.
