Sports and pool center Huis op Zuid: A healthy sports climate on all fronts

Huis op Zuid on the Laan op Zuid in Rotterdam will be a new, multifunctional building combining sports, catering and living. During construction, as many sustainable materials and installations as possible will be used. Among others by Van Dorp Projects, commissioned by contractor Group Van Roey, which is responsible for the mechanical and electrical installations in the sports and swimming center. In addition, the specialist from Capelle aan den IJssel is realizing the complete swimming pool installation.

"In this project, the client and contractor are assured of one contracting party, one contact person and one commissioner for all installations in the sports and swimming center," says Sylvester Winkelhof, project manager at Van Dorp projects and penciler for this project. "Based on the specifications of the architect, consultant and structural engineer, we worked out all installations and clashed them extensively in Revit/BIM. Here we worked very closely with our sister companies van Dorp Zoetermeer (E-installations) and Van Dorp-KWB (swimming pool technology), in order to create a healthy sports climate on all fronts. But also with the contractor, so that construction and installations are perfectly matched. Immediately after the construction period we started the implementation."

"The sports and swimming pool center with reception, catering and offices will be connected to Rotterdam's district heating network," Winkelhof says. "We are also installing a chiller. A combination of underfloor heating, floor cooling and air treatment was chosen as the delivery system. In addition, radiant panels are hung in the sports hall. This keeps the building at a comfortable temperature in both winter and summer." A heat exchanger (TSA) will be installed to heat the pool water. "In addition, the pool installation includes pumps, compressors, chlorine controls, (sand) filters, hair traps, piping and fittings."

The E-installations include the LED lighting, data facilities, fire alarm and evacuation system. On the roof will be solar panels in a north-east/south-west arrangement and with a combined capacity of up to 130,400 Wp. "A particular challenge in this project is the short lead time, combined with the uncertain availability of materials," Winkelhof said. "In addition, the construction site is small. The project is located in the center of Rotterdam. Therefore, we use public transportation as much as possible. Also, whenever possible, components will be prefabricated and delivered just-in-time to the project." The sports and swimming center is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2023.
