Exceptional cabling for University Library Amsterdam

Extraordinary cabling for University Library Amsterdam

In Amsterdam the realization of the new University Library is in full swing. A huge project, with Climate Control Systems (CCS) of Amsterdam responsible for supplying the measurement and control cabling. "This is one of the largest renovations in the Amsterdam area. To be part of it is wonderful!"

We talk to two of the owners of CCS: Jan Korbijn and Martin Koldenhof. As project manager of measurement and control technology, Koldenhof has been involved in the project since day one. "Client BINX chose us as a partner for the realization of the measurement and control cabling. We are, as it were, an extension of the installer and part of the construction team. Together we have more than 150 years of experience, so a project of this size suits us well," he says.

All-encompassing cabling

Much of the control cabling consists of BACnet cabling. Due to the choice of control equipment, this is a requirement. Further cabling consists of connecting all messages from the air curtains and pumps in the building. Each room has individual control. Korbijn: "In addition to the cabling through the building, we are also responsible for the realization of the measurement and control cabling for the primary control cabinets. These control and regulate the heating and ventilation of the building."

"It really is a complete project that we are realizing, which also brings challenges. For example, communication with the parties involved. For the operation of the total network, good communication is essential." In addition, commissioning the property's network is quite a challenge. "This is because each controller is linked to the University of Amsterdam's network. This data network is commissioned only last. For us an extra challenge to get everything working properly within a relatively short period of time."

An extraordinary project

"It's not just another corner house that you renovate," Koldenhof says with a laugh. "Because of the property's listed status, the process was a real puzzle. You can't just break through a wall, for example. That's why you have to think carefully in advance about how to lay the wiring. We also have to be resourceful to solve the constraints of the building in execution. For example, a sliding chair is used to lay cabling in the low technical room."

Whereas CCS normally runs complete projects, from technical advice, supply of control cabinets and software engineering to project engineering and maintenance, in this project it only does the cabling. But even there both men are very proud: "This is the largest project that client BINX has done so far. Moreover, it is an important building for the University of Amsterdam. To be allowed to be part of that is super cool!"
