The Tripolis complex along the A1-Zuid near Amsterdam is being redeveloped in a spectacular way. Two of the three monumental buildings will be completely renovated with respect for the ideas of architect Aldo van Eyck. An impressive 'landscraper' will rise next to the existing towers. Twelve stories high and yet airy and transparent.
The architectural concept for the new Tripolis Park was created by architect Winy Maas of MVRDV. This firm made the first draft in 3D and elaborated the concept through to the design phase. Then EGM Architects, as elaborating architect, took over the model and further elaboration. "On the one hand, this work consists of the restoration of a master monument," says Gary Cornel, project manager of EGM architects. "On the other hand, there is the new construction of a beautiful office complex. Add to this the scale of the work and its high-profile character, and it will be clear that we are dealing with an urban planning statement here."
The 'landscraper' - parallel to the A1 motorway - will soon offer 50,000 m2 of office space and is strikingly transparent. All building facades are largely made of glass, making the building function as a window that offers a view of the Van Eyck monument behind it. "Everywhere in the project, old and new are connected," says Vincent Ketting, partner of EGM architects. "That requires creative connections, beautiful and beating. Now that's a quality of EGM. We are strong in complex projects and detailing."
During high times, eight to 10 structural engineers and technical draftsmen are active. "We test MVRDV's model, conduct project management and are jointly responsible for the technical elaboration. Now that the first tenants have come forward, the project really should be delivered in May 2022."
