Vakschool Rijn IJssel: Integral installation concept based on proprietary technology

In mid-July 2019, the redeveloped vocational school of ROC Rijn IJssel in Wageningen will be completed. Total installer Linthorst Techniek is responsible for the complete E and W installations. The installation concept has been designed all-electric, the existing gas boilers only for usage peaks. "With an intelligent integral system equipped with heat pumps and heat recovery, energy consumption is minimized," says project leader Jeroen van Neerbos.

Vakschool Wageningen is a vocational school for bakery, hospitality, tourism and facility services. The educational building on Marijkeweg, built in 1998, has been renovated and expanded by approximately 2,900 m² since the summer of 2018. Linthorst Techniek has been involved in the project from the beginning. The total installer is formally a subcontractor of Van Wijnen, but works with a Design & Build approach as standard. "That means we made adjustments to the specifications and calculated them for the client, all in the context of energy reduction and budget," says Van Neerbos.

As is well known, "all-electric" is very economical to operate and conducive to reducing CO2-emissions. "We designed a system for the school to operate completely gas-free in the future. In this case, there is a payback period of seven years for the proposed additional investments outside the specifications. With this we were able to convince the client. The advantage is that we are a total installer and can realize this kind of customization in a completely arranged manner, including all the technical disciplines involved. Our E- and W-engineers sit together daily in one room, and weekly with the contractor's engineers; the architect is also present. We are the first party to enter the building at the project start, and the last party to leave soon after commissioning."

Operating integrally
The total installer from Apeldoorn is responsible for heating, cooling and air conditioning, rainwater and waste water drainage, plumbing and control systems, as well as all E-installations including security and pv systems. "The architectural incorporation of the total technology - both in the existing and new building - makes this project special; an integral process in which adjustments were proposed in consultation with architect and contractor." The complex of classrooms, restaurant (existing construction), as well as practical classrooms including bakery with four ovens per classroom (new construction), has been integrated by Linthorst Techniek installation technology supported by its own innovations. "The basis is the TT 68 high-temperature heat pump, an in-house manufacture already used to heat entire buildings all-electric and for the generation of hot water. Combined with the KAT system, which reuses residual heat from the kitchens, and a smart connection to the existing gas boilers, an integral installation concept is created. We are also responsible for the building management system, which can be operated online and with touch screens. Integration of installations based on in-house expertise is our specialty and is used here to deliver a fully operational vocational school before the start of the teaching year."
