The large-scale renovation of ’t IJ Brewery is nearing completion. Du Prie asked Muko Montage to help design the roof and facade cladding. This collaboration paid off, as the entire exterior envelope was completed in just eight days, despite the limited space and complex construction logistics. Inside, too, some ingenious solutions were implemented.
The exterior cladding consists of 1,130 m² of insulated sandwich panels with PIR insulation and a FoodSafe coating on the interior, while the roof consists of approximately 800 m² of profiled steel sheeting. “In addition to the roof and exterior cladding, we also installed the interior partition walls and firewalls,” says Erwin Mulder of Muko Montage. “Between the existing and new sections, we installed 256 m² of rock wool sandwich panels as a fire wall. Additionally, we installed another 580 m² of cladding inside that features both a FoodSafe coating and a 30-minute fire resistance rating.”

The logistics turned out to be just as challenging as the assembly itself. “There was hardly any space for storage or a crane,” Mulder recalls. “As a result, the public road had to temporarily serve as a work site. Construction therefore took place in phases: during the first phase, the crane could still be on the construction site, while the public road was necessary for the second phase.” The heavy rock wool panels, in particular, required tight scheduling. “Weighing about 30 kilograms per square meter, 12-meter-long panels simply cannot be installed by hand. They had to be brought in one by one with the crane and installed immediately. That’s why, every morning, exactly what was to be installed that day was delivered. This created a tightly organized ‘conveyor belt’ of delivery, hoisting, and installation.”

The drafting work also required careful attention. “The new building is largely constructed on an existing foundation, which means the bottom of the sheathing is at different heights,” Mulder explains. “There was hardly any repetitive work: virtually every connection was different. But we were confident we could handle that, too.” By working long hours and coordinating the work precisely, Muko Montage kept its presence on the busy Amsterdam construction site as brief as possible. The exterior cladding was completed in about eight days. This was followed by another week for the interior work.
