DOOR, Maasdijk | Environmentally friendly and energy-efficient refrigeration system

What you do, you must do well. Under this motto, Hamelink Koeling has been designing, supplying and installing refrigeration systems for companies in the AGF and food sector for nearly thirty years. Coöperatie DOOR involved the Westland family business at an early stage in the construction of its new premises in Maasdijk, in order to contribute ideas for an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient refrigeration system.

"Based on the specifications, we worked out the concept and design for the refrigeration system," says Sales Engineer Marco van der Helm of Hamelink Refrigeration. "In BIM, we coordinated our design with the other parties. Especially the structural integration - our installation required a high machine room - and the coordination with the sprinkler system were points of attention. We also thought about the accessibility of the installation for service and maintenance already in the engineering phase."

Separately adjustable

"The refrigeration system has a cooling capacity of 1,050 kW and consists of air coolers mounted in the packing area, shipping areas, keg area and warehouses," Van der Helm says. "All areas can be controlled separately. The entire installation is linked to a computer system with PLC control, which is a foolproof combination. The control can be either local or remote. We can also monitor remotely and make adjustments if necessary."

Natural refrigerants

He continues: "The refrigeration system uses the natural refrigerants ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia part is located in the engine room and provides cooling for the carbon dioxide pumped to the air coolers. This stepped cooling ensures sustainability and safety." The plant is also energy efficient. For example, all air coolers are equipped with speed-controlled EC fans. Other energy-efficient components include speed-controlled compressors and compressors equipped with soft starters. Furthermore, heat exchangers ensure that the heat released from the cooling process is used to heat water for the crate washer. The remaining heat is dissipated through an air-cooled condenser on the roof. This condenser is equipped with speed-controlled EC fans and a weather-dependent condenser pressure control.

"It was an enjoyable project," Van der Helm reflects. "Within the construction team, everyone went for the highest quality. We also helped each other to meet the schedule. We can be proud of what we put together."
