The swimming environment begins in the mechanical room

Four pool cabinets maintain the air quality and temperature at Aquadoorn

Anyone who swims laps at Aquadoorn, the new swimming pool in Apeldoorn-Noord, won’t notice much of it. Yet the behind-the-scenes equipment determines whether swimming there is enjoyable. FläktGroup is supplying four pool control cabinets that maintain the air quality and temperature in the swimming area. The large cabinets must fit into a cramped utility room located beneath and next to the pool.

FläktGroup became involved in the project through the consulting firm BBP, which specializes in building-related systems. FläktGroup and BBP have been working together for years. “When BBP creates a design, they often submit a request to us for the equipment,” explains Hubert van Spaandonk, business development manager at FläktGroup. The consulting firm draws up the specifications, after which contractors bid on the project. Installation company Lammerink was awarded the contract and chose FläktGroup’s enclosures. “The consultant specifies our enclosures because the firm has confidence in our product and has successfully used it on previous projects.”

FläktGroup primarily operates in the commercial construction sector, and air-handling units for swimming pools are also part of its product portfolio. The company has been supplying equipment for swimming pools and other facilities for many years, formerly under the name GEA Happel. Van Spaandonk: “We’ve previously supplied equipment for De Welle in Drachten, De Wisselslag in Venlo, De Meerkamp in Amstelveen, and many others.”

Large boxes in a cramped space

Fläktgroep supplied the air handling units for the swimming pool in Apeldoorn: four units for the pool area and several units for the common areas. The biggest challenge lies in the installation. The mechanical room is located beneath and next to the pool, with columns that make the structural layout difficult. “Air handling units are pretty big boxes. You have to look carefully to make sure you can fit your equipment in,” explains Van Spaandonk.

FläktGroup creates 3D drawings of the cabinets and provides them for the BIM model. This allows the company to plan the installation without any risk. That requires a great deal of coordination with the consultant and contractor. “We’re good at adapting the design so that it fits perfectly into the construction.” The selected cabinets are of the CAIRpool type, featuring a special coating to withstand the humid pool air and heat recovery. “The conditioned air is adjusted to match the water temperature, so swimmers don’t feel a chill when they get out of the pool and can breathe in plenty of fresh air. This allows visitors to swim safely and comfortably.”
