Dual-arm spray robot automates the finishing of wooden window frames

With a Dual Cefla iGiotto injection molding robot WEBO is automating the next step in the production of wooden and wood-aluminum frames. The system automatically scans and recognizes window frames and then determines how they should be painted. Combined with automatic color changes and RFID control, the finishing process becomes more efficient and predictable. For the construction industry, this contributes to consistent quality, increased production capacity, and shorter lead times.

In window frame production, batch sizes, dimensions, designs, and colors vary from project to project. That is why 2.5D scanning is used to automatically measure window frames in advance. The software recognizes the shape and dimensions and uses that information to determine the necessary spray patterns.

This allows the production line to handle various frame configurations within the same production flow without having to manually set up a new spraying process for each version.

A single legal proceeding

The two Cefla iGiotto spray robots are positioned on either side of the production line. This allows both sides to be finished in a single pass, eliminating the need to rotate the window frame in between.

The color change also occurs automatically. This allows for faster switching between different colors and minimizes paint loss during color changes.

RFID links window frames to production data

Through RFID, product data remains linked to the specific window frame throughout the production process. This ensures that the installation automatically receives the correct information and becomes part of a broader digital production flow in which engineering, work planning, and production are becoming increasingly interconnected.

Along with the installation of the spray robots, part of the factory has been reorganized. The pre-assembly and final assembly areas have been brought closer together, reducing the need for internal transport and making the production process more efficient.

Shorter and more predictable turnaround times

The dual-injection robot is one component of a broader automation initiative within the woodworking factory. WEBO is thus focusing on increasing production capacity, improving process efficiency, and achieving shorter and more predictable lead times, while maintaining its existing quality standards.  By further optimizing the entire production process, WEBO is working toward a standard lead time of three days for wooden window frames. This will allow window frame production to better align with construction processes in which delivery times are being planned with increasing precision.
