Modern technology with a historic twist 

Smart integration of lighting and power systems, IT, and security in a former maritime academy

“Projects such as the renovation of the former Maritime Training School in Leiden are unique. The combination of historic heritage and modern technology, the inner-city location, and the tight timeline called for specialized expertise, which our professionals delivered with excellence.” Speaking is Maurice Hoffman, director of HoffmanDME Techniek, which was responsible for the electrical and power systems, security, and IT infrastructure.

HoffmanDME Techniek provides consulting, design, and installation services for mechanical, electrical, security, and fire alarm systems for new construction and renovation projects. In addition, the company handles the service, management, and maintenance of technical systems. “We value long-term partnerships with established clients, such as Van Wijnen Haarlemmermeer,” says Hoffman. “To successfully carry out the renovation of the former Maritime Training School, we were invited to join the construction team at an early stage. Based on the interior design by Studio Daphne Jansen and in collaboration with Van Wijnen, we handled the detailed engineering of the electrical systems. One challenge, for example, was concealing all the cables and conduits. Because the building is a historic landmark, we couldn’t simply drill and mill holes just anywhere.”

During the preparatory phase, therefore, a great deal of attention was paid to the proper placement of cables and conduits. In addition, careful consideration was given to the correct placement and design of Wi-Fi access points, laptop and USB chargers, and smoke detectors. “This ensures compliance with modern requirements for educational environments while also preserving the building’s historic value,” explains Hoffman. “The security system was designed in accordance with regulations, while for the IT installation we collaborated with a regular IT partner of Leithon Vastgoed. In addition, a lighting consultant was involved, who developed a specific lighting plan for which we handled the cabling, installation of the fixtures, and implementation of the home automation system.”

In the new educational environment, the emphasis is on language, literature, and philosophical education. “That’s why specific requirements were set for lighting and IT, among other things,” says Hoffman. “For example, in certain rooms, the internet connection must be turned off when classes are being held there. Furthermore, every light fixture in the former Teacher Training College can be controlled individually, ensuring the right balance between functionality and ambiance at any time of day.”
