During the renovation of ’t IJ Brewery, only the building’s floors were retained. “In fact, this is essentially a new construction,” says Frank Severs. He is the project manager representing Van den Pol Elektrotechniek, which is applying its broad expertise to the ‘t IJ project. “In addition to the complete electrical installation and the PV system, we are also handling the LED lighting, data installation, and burglar and fire alarm systems.”
The existing floors slope downward. In addition, some new floors have been poured, causing the height differences to change as construction progresses. “That may seem like a minor detail, but it can have major consequences. So we need to pay close attention when making calculations. The briefing for the installers also has to be very precise.”
Brewery ‘t IJ’s high sustainability goals make it a perfect match for Van den Pol, the most sustainable electrical contractor in the Netherlands. “We were involved early on in the process,” said Severs. “The goal was to create a completely gas-free brewery, including two electric boilers. However, grid congestion threw a wrench in the works, as the initially allocated power connection was insufficient. That’s why we decided to use a gas-fired boiler in addition to an electric one.”

Van den Pol is increasingly helping customers avoid the effects of grid congestion by installing solar panels, battery storage, and an energy management system. “Due to the relatively limited space available for solar panels, that’s not an option here.”
’t IJ Brewery is a well-known name. “Almost everyone has had a beer from ’t IJ at some point. That certainly makes this project special. Our people enjoy working here.” Another important factor is the good working relationship with the other construction partners and the client. “The brewmaster at ’t IJ and the site manager from contractor du Prie took the initiative to create a special beer to celebrate the renovated brewery. Everyone is curious. We’re looking forward to raising a glass together when the project is completed.”
