Safe and low-noise construction: all in consultation with school board

In this new school, the Pontes Pieter Zeeman and SBO De Meie with all their facilities will be brought together under one roof. This will create a unique school complex: customized education close to home.

Construction group Schrijver began the demolition of some gymnasiums at Hatfield Park in Zierikzee last summer. It was then able to start construction. The new Pontes Pieter Zeeman will have a size of about 9,500 m² in three floors and will be built next to the 'old' school. When the new building is ready for use, the former school building will be demolished.

Wet foundation phase

Given the time of year - high summer - Bouwgroep Schrijver expected a sunny, trouble-free foundation phase. But that turned out differently. "The water level was extremely high and the foundation was problematic," says Arno de Rijder, project manager of Bouwgroep Schrijver. "We had to pump from the very first moment to prevent the entire construction site from flooding. That took a lot of extra time."

Intensive consultations

Because lessons are still being taught in the adjacent "old" school building, Bouwgroep Schrijver is applying additional rules regarding safety and noise. "We established these rules in close consultation with the school board. During pile driving, for example, the nearest classrooms are blocked off. This close contact remains throughout the project. At the construction meetings, the management and site manager of Pontes Pieter Zeeman are always present."

Continuous construction flows

With an area of some 9,500 m², the construction of Pontes Pieter Zeeman is among the larger projects. With well thought-out planning, Bouwgroep Schrijver monitors the smooth running of the project. It follows the fixed sequence in all building sections - steel construction, floors, façade elements - and monitors the continuity of construction flows everywhere. "Only the heat sources to be drilled are difficult to schedule," says De Rijder. "These are only drilled at a later stage and have a considerable impact on the construction site. Broadly speaking, we can prepare for this; at the detail level, it remains a challenge to plan and coordinate this properly."

Beautiful and within budget

To give the school a nice, clean look while staying within budget, the design was simplified without compromising the aesthetic.

The school will have varied cladding, alternating between masonry and sleek facade panels. "This is practical, simple and sleek." At the end of November 2021, Bouwgroep Schrijvers will hand over the building and outside grounds. This will be followed by a month to move in and the students will be able to move into their new school building starting in the new year. That leaves the demolition of the former school building for Construction Group Schrijver.
