Platform on new construction, renovation, restoration and transformation
There is room for four GP practices, a pharmacy, a consultation office, physical therapy and more healthcare providers. Main contractor for this modern and sustainable building was Henselmans Bouw & Ontwikkeling.
Built by De Wildt is an acquaintance of Henselmans Bouw & Ontwikkeling. The company had worked for this client before and was now asked for the architectural part. The contractor delivered the building shell, wind and watertight. Jochem Hoogland of Henselmans explains, "Built by De Wildt realizes buildings for health centers and general practitioner practices. For this they look for a contractor who can realize it; they often finish the interior themselves. At Zonnestein Medical Center, too, she completed the finishing touches herself, with contractors she works with more often. In this way, Built by De Wildt keeps control of both the shell and the finishing."
A very important theme in the construction of the medical center was sustainability. So important, in fact, that the building became 30% more sustainable than required by legislation. This was achieved by using high-quality insulation materials, LED lighting throughout the building and a heat pump. As a result, the building is completely gas-free. No fewer than 92 solar panels generate electricity. In addition, there is sedum on the roof, which collects rainwater and provides an extra layer of insulation.
The materials that make up the building are also committed to sustainability. For example, the steel from the steel structure can be reused, should the building be demolished in the future. A combination of FSC-certified wood and concrete bricks was chosen for the facade. This is a heavy, flat facade brick that is processed without butt joints for a sleek look. The aluminum window frames were fitted with triple glazing.
On February 6, 2020, the go-ahead for construction was given. In November 2020, the building was completed. A grand opening was planned for early January 2021, but it had to be modified due to coronagraphs. The pride about the building and the collaboration is no less. "The contacts with Built by De Wildt always run smoothly, also now," Hoogland looks back. "The subcontractors we worked with are parties we have known for years. That went extremely well." Still, there were some challenges in creating the two-story building. Hoogland: "It was a spacious construction site, fairly in the center of Amstelveen. We had been given guidelines for the supply of building materials, because many school-age children live in the area. So we had to deliver materials at set times to avoid inconvenience. However, this did not cause any problems and we were able to deliver on time."
The final result is a 1,824-square-meter, two-story medical center. Outside came 35 parking spaces. It became a modern, sleek and above all sustainable building that can serve as a place of employment for various medical professionals for years to come. In short: a center for the health of people and the environment.
